U.S. public libraries: We lose them at our peril

Those in cities that haven’t preserved their libraries, those less fortunate and baffled by technology, and our children will be the first to suffer. But sooner or later, we’ll all feel the loss as one of the most effective levelers of privilege and avenues of reinvention — one of the great engines of democracy — begins to disappear.

This week in libraries

The Shanachie Tour is two Dutch librarians, Erik Boekesteijn and Jaap van de Geer.  Erik and Jaap were recently ‘Down Under’ and visited a number of Australian libraries.  ALIA was pleased to sponsor them to produce a special  Episode of their international online media show “This Week in Libraries” http://www.thisweekinlibraries.com – to help promote our libraries and the great work that we do.

The video also follows on from the launch of The National Year of Reading 2012 http://www.love2read.org.au last week.

Books and literacy in the digital age

Ralph Raab writes: “I become so perplexed when I read articles or hear on the news that books are slowly and inexorably vanishing, that computers, handheld eReaders, and iPods will surely win out and force books out of our schools, our libraries, and ultimately, our lives. But before we can discuss how the new technology can be used side-by-side with books to promote literacy, it behoves us to first understand how we got to this point as well as the demographic that is sounding the death knell for printed matter.”

Protecting Yourself Online Publication for Libraries

The Australian Government has produced the Protecting Yourself Online What Everyone Needs to Know booklet as part of National Cyber Security Awareness Week.

As libraries are a major point of access for many Australians to the Internet they are an ideal place to distribute the publication.

Libraries can provide their customers with the document in either hard copy or electronically.

If libraries would like to distribute hard copy versions of the publications, these can be order by emailing Cybersecurity@ag.gov.au with the number of publications they would like, the contact name and delivery address.

If libraries choose to make the booklet available through their websites, we would prefer that they link to the publication off the website, http://www.ag.gov.au/www/agd/rwpattach.nsf/VAP/(4CA02151F94FFB778ADAEC2E6EA8653D)~AG_PYO_brooklet_LR.PDF/$file/AG_PYO_brooklet_LR.PDF and http://www.ag.gov.au/www/agd/rwpattach.nsf/VAP/(4CA02151F94FFB778ADAEC2E6EA8653D)~AG_PYO_bro_LR.PDF/$file/AG_PYO_bro_LR.PDF .

This ensures that only one version is in circulation.
